Opticla Votes: 13 Analog Votes: 3 Total voters I imagine the CD player is reading the digital data off the disc turning it into an analog signal, then converting it back digtial a digital signal before sending it down the fiber-optic line after which the receiver converts shat back to analog. By the same line of thinking, I imagine that the optica, signal from the CD is converted to analog only one time and stays that way all the way through the RCAs and into my receiver.

HDCD has been long dead. Pacific Microsonics that was what is vagisil anti itch cream used for up by Microsoft in ? I'd not even heard of them before a little search What about the amplifier?
I will now send the link to the website that said the Model Two is the best You read the wiki on HDCD as to alternates to cd players with the appropriate tech? Have you tried any of the other ways to read the data on HDCD? Does your current cd player have the ability to decode HDCD?
While recently cataloguing my cds I realized I had several HDCD discs but have never tried to play them with a player with the decoding at least I don't think I've had such a player. The ones I have that don't sound that good are from really old albums, 60's or 70's. I didn't read the wiki on HDCD. Oh well either if find someone who can modify it or it goes back. So you just want to see if the sound would be better by not using the Linn's dac and use an external one instead?

An optical cable is a physical connection that transfers audio digital signals by light. Is there a difference in sound quality between a cheap CD player or an expensive high-end CD player - both with optical digital out? It is simply a feature. The expensive CD player will also use better power components transformers and have a better analog output stage. This generally will yield a "better" sound. It depends on the associated equipment and listening practice if you can hear a difference between CD players. Totally not intending to sound like a dick Right up front I'll tell you that I'm not really going to answer your question. But your post prompted me to ask a couple of questions and make a couple of comments.
If you were there, in the small hifi shops that carry this stuff, and you were already talking to a salesman about it, why, oh why did you not take a little time and listen for yourself? I could tell you one thing, a sales guy can tell you something else, some friend of yours can say something entirely different, and you'd still not really know what the answer is.
Until you check it out for yourself, you can't know for sure if, to your ears, there's a difference. Also, being pretty familiar with many of the independent stereo stores in the Boston area, I'm just curious which one s you're talking about.
IMO, this is the price point where the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in; spending a lot more money isn't necessarily going to buy you a whole lot more sound quality.
Check it out if you're interested. OK, here is my question in a simpler form. I connect both to my receiver using an optical digital cable and play the same CD on both. Will I hear a difference? I assume that both will just read the data off the CD and transfer it through the cable to the receiver, which then will convert it to analog audio signal, therefore the only thing that matters is the quality of the receiver and the speakers. I'm sure some hardcore audiophiles will disagree with me, but honestly, unless you have ears of solid gold, you will not notice a difference.
My question is pretty much idle curiosity - simply because I don't see how it is possible for one CD player to be better than the other if all they are doing is simply reading the data off the music CD and then outputting that data to an external decoder receiver, computer, MD recorder, etc. The difference between your lowend and highend probally is more in how clean the signal goes out. Probally more to do with the power supply they use and how tolerate the equiptment is to interference.
Though who the hell knows if you'll know the difference or not. It not like you turn up your stereo at full volume. Unless you have a really good system, you're not going to be able to tell much any difference. It's called a phase lock loop, and tiny fluctuations in PLL loop response create what is known as jitter.
Clock jitter can be heard, and it can be measured. See, the DAC has to "lock" onto the frequency of the transport. There will be a finite rolloff in the PLL loop filter, which imparts a characteristic jitter response that will vary from device to device. But unless you got a few grand invested in your stereo, I promise you ain't gonna hear the difference. Tay awya from those tweekers in the hifi shops; they'll drive ya nuts if you let'em Poptones has it spot on.
While cheaper decks have slightly inferior transport mechanisms and DAC's, you're gonna have to spend a LOT of money to get noticeably better sound quality from an outboard DAC. Even then, the rest of your system will need to be high quality for you to even hear the difference - pre amp, power amp, interconnects, speaker cables, speakers How much money did you want to spend?
Connected via optical? Probably not, unless one of the players has a really poor and out of spec digital output. But if you connected those two players via the analog output, then there'd probably be a small but noticeable difference -- if you listen very closely.
